InstaPundit posts e-mails from his readers. They agree that the soldiers in Iraq don't want conscripts. Right now, the soldiers who are in Iraq are there because that's their calling. They like it that way.
I've been a conscript myself, twice. Not in the armed forces, but in another force that works to guarantee liberty -- jury duty.
Most jurors are, if not eager to serve, at least content. But I recall one case where one of the jurors made it quite clear during voir dire that she was an unwilling participant, and would serve with, at best, bad grace. After a brief sidebar, counsel for both sides stipulated that she be thanked and excused.
After the jury had been empaneled and the rest of us sent back to the pool, one of the other jurors commented on the unfairness of this woman being cut loose because she copped an attitude. I asked him how happy he'd be trying to deliberate a case with that woman and her attitude in the jury room with him.
I think he saw the point.
