Good news in Iraq

Some items that haven't received as much attention as the fact that insurgents continue to insurge...

  1. Revenue from oil exports is up to an estimated $9.2 billion for 2004.
  2. Unemployment is down to 28%
  3. Household income is now $214/month, up from $126.
  4. The Iraqi dinar has been stable for the past six months.
  5. Some 30-40% of the marshlands drained by Hussein have been restored
  6. A poor area of Baghdad is getting water from a rehabilitated water treatment plant.
  7. 85% of children have received immunizations.
  8. There are 240 hospitals operating.
  9. There are 1200 preventive health clinics operating.
  10. There are 2500 schools up and running, with another 4500 planned.
  11. Another 1200 schools will be rehabilitated.
  12. 32,000 teachers and administrators have been trained
  13. Power supplies are at 120,000 peak megawatt hours, up from prewar levels of 95,600 MWP.
  14. 88,500 police officers have been trained. This is 97.75% of the goal.
  15. 18,200 border guards have been trained. This is 89.2% of the goal.
  16. 37,400 national guardsmen have been trained. This is 91% of the goal.
  17. 11,200 army regulars have been trained. This is only 32% of goal.
  18. Al Sadr's forces have pledged to disarm.
