Dogs with spinal cord injuries were injected with a polymer form of antifreeze. They had a much higher recovery rate than the control dogs. 68% of the treated dogs were able to walk again, compared with 25% of the control dogs.
It seems to work by forming a molecular bandage, sealing over injuries in the spine and preventing a cascade of injury which often does more damage than the original trauma. If the injury is more than three days old, it will be too late to prevent this additional damage.
Purdue University, which conducted the research, has enlisted a partner to prepare the substance in a form suitable for human trials.
