5 Rules for Coping with Tragedy

  1. First reports may be wrong. At least, follow the "48-hour rule".
  2. Don't politicize the tragedy -- you're more likely than not to be wrong.
  3. Don't blame heated rhetoric. Rhetoric is always heated.
  4. Keep the tragedy in context.
  5. Letislate carefully. (Indeed, craft policy at any level carefully.)
